hagel's nomination, leaving the president without a pentagon secretary and there seems to be more where that came from. we decide to look at how this past tuesday, state of the union day played out starting with valerie jarrett on "morning joe" making the case there for bipartisanship. here she was at dawn. >> he's determined to work and move our country forward. chris: not so fast. three hours later kelly o'donnell on nbc. >> the president had some sharp words. here's the key quote -- don't think he's got the guts to do it. chris: later that afternoon in the fight over chuck hagel, two republicans questioned the loyalty of vietnam vet hagel. >> we saw with his nomination something truly extraordinary, the government of iran formally and publicly praising the nomination of a defense secretary. >> i would say he's endorsed by them. you can't get any closeyer then that. chris: that was the backdrop by 9:00 that night when the president told the same republicans the country expects more. >> they don't expect those of us in this chamber to agree on every issue. but they do expect us to put

and congressional republicans are now at odds on two fronts. the battle over the nomination of chuck hagel for defense secretary. it's been delayed another week, that vote. the $85 billion of automatic spending cuts which is scheduled to take effect in two weeks time. we have it covered this morning. we start with a view from the white house. in washington the job of the white house chief of staff is known as the most powerful post in town. there is a new man occupying that seat of power and he is here with us this morning on "meet the press." his first appearance. who is he? how did he get here? denis mcdonough grew up one of 11 kids in a small town. he was a high school football star. he worked in the house for congressman lee hamilton and in the senate for majority leader tom daschle and later for barack obama. when the freshman senator decided to make a run for the white house in 2008 he tapped mcdonough to be his foreign policy adviser for the campaign and once president, obama appointed him. the president noted when he announced him as his pick, mcdonough has been involved in every m

of these agenda items. first of all, chuck hagel's nomination, it is being held up, the expectation, he will ultimately be confirmed. but bill cullen, former defense secretary, this week said something to politico that caught my attention that underlines the problem hagel has, that will put him in a a difficult position once he gets there. those resentments will weigh around. i think it's tragic what is happening and i think it's shameful. if he is confirmed, is he a weaker defense secretary and is that something that weighs on the president's mind? >> no, he is not going to be a weaker defense secretary. he will be a great defense secretary. he is a leading republican senator. he has always done the hard stuff and made it look easy frankly. >> mccain will be coming up in a couple of minutes saying frankly republicans don't like him. i had an opportunity to talk to senator mccain about this. several other republicans are uncomfortable how this has played out and why i think senator mccain and others say they intend to vote to end this filibuster as soon as they get back from the recess.

. >>> i'm going to go chuck hagel when i finish here and say i'm sorry, sorry this has happened. i'm sorry for the president. i'm sorry for the country and i'm sorry for you, but we're not going to give up on you. >> democrats vowing to stand by their man, even as republicans delivered a sharp rebuke to fellow republican chuck hagel this week in his bid to become defense secretary. joining me now is republican senator john barrasso from wyoming. senator, thanks for being here. >> thank you, candy. >> something caught our eye that senator mccain said in explaining the republican -- part of the republican resistance to hagel in which he says it goes back to there's a lot of ill will towards senator hagel because when he was a republican, he attacked president bush mercilessly, at one point said he was the worst president since herbert hoover and said that the surge was the worst blunder since the vietnam war which is nonsense and was very anti his own party and people. people don't forget that. is this a revenge vote? mean, this seems -- i understand that people, a lot of republicans who per

hagel's nomination for defense secretary will remain tied up. we will get reaction to his treatment from fellow nebraska senator bob kerry. we will talk to him aboutt that and other things, as well. also the president's reaction says it all in this photo of the week, the president was at a preschool in decatur, georgia pushing his plan to ensure high quality programs for all children. gave out some high fives and fist bumps. we'll be right back. this is msnbc, the place for politics. aspirin, really? i haven't thought about aspirin for years. aspirin wouldn't really help my headache, i don't think. aspirin is just old school. people have doubts about taking aspirin for pain. but they haven't experienced extra strength bayer advanced aspirin. in fact, in a recent survey, 95% of people who tried it agreed that it relieved their headache fast. what's different? it has micro-particles. enters the bloodstream fast and rushes relief to the site of pain. visit fastreliefchallenge.com today for a special trial offer. visit fastreliefchallenge.com it's been said that beauty is in the ewell...beho

a week delay and probably going to be confirmed. >> senator hagel supported barack obama over john mccain. i think it is very personal with mccain. i think with other republicans, they are looking ahead to the 2014 races and they don't want to be primaried from the right. they have to look tough here. in the end, they are saying he will get through. he will get through without perhaps any republican votes or a handful of republican votes. i don't think that say very good message to send to the rest of the world the politics the republicans are playing in this. mccain, he wants to have it both ways. he wants to say i'll hold him up, but he will get through. he doesn't entirely want his fingerprints on this either. the kind of politics that everybody seems to play is blame-free politics. it is not possible. the public is sitting out there and they will blame everybody in the end. >> eleanor and emily, sit tight. we will learn details about the president's immigration reform. this is from the chief of staff. >> will be prepared and the bipartisan talks on the hill that we're supporting,

of the relationships congress is holding uplet nominations of both john brennan of the c.i.a., and chuck hagel at the defense department, they tell us there were 70 e-mails that went back and forth if during that week on what susan rice should say on this broadcast and the other talk shows the following sunday, and somewhere along the way the idea that this was the act of terrorists, was taken out. why don't you, number one give the senators those e-mails and let them find up on the what they say they want to find out about this? and who in fact did take the connection to al qaeda and the terrorists will out of those talking points? >> well, i think there's-- there is an ongoing effort between the administration and the intelligence community to resolve exactly what they need to get. in addition to everything else we've already done, bob 20 hearings or briefings with members of congress, 10,000 pages of documents that we provided. and so we'll resolve whatever it is on this question-- >> schieffer: you'll give them the e-mails? >> we'll resolve it. i don't know how it will get resolved. in fac
